SKIING MEMORIES IN LARDER LAKE

<< -- Back Home

Tommy Sheldon and friend in 1941

The Larder Lake Ski Club has been operating for over 60 years. The trees were cut down by crazy skiers with axes...trees were hard to ski around. This made skiing more enjoyable. Side stepping was the way up. There were no lifts.

Then they put in a rope tow, you had to hang on for dear life. This was followed with a state of the art T-bar. People became spoiled, no side stepping, no trees to avoid, no life threatening situations, no adreneline rush. Add to this saftey bindings, steel edges, wax, groomed hills and the thrill is gone. Parallel skiing became to easy and boring. Nobody wiped out anymore. Today things are different..

Snowboarding has arrived?

Come spend an invigorating day on the slopes of the Larder Ski Hill. We have 4 runs that will challenge both skiers and snowboarders snowboarders.

A TUBING run is now open. We have a T-Bar lift and a nice newly expanded chalet where a hot drink or snack awaits. For more info call 705-643-2596.

Ski lessons are available to all members, both skiers and snowboarders. There are 5 levels from beginners to expert. Our skiers start young and learn the skills that lead to a lifelong pleasure. Our hills offer all the challenge one needs to hone their skills and enjoy the fresh air,not to mention the beautiful view.

Ski lessons are fun

The Larder Lake Ski Hill is about 30 KM east of Kirkland lake, an hours drive north from New Liskeard and a nice little walk from anywhere in The town of Larder Lake. The members of the Larder Ski Club have a wonderful facility to entertain themselves during the winter months.

Where else in Northern Ontario can you walk from your home to a ski hill and be skiing in about 20 minutes, that includes the walk from home. This is why the skiers from Larder Lake ski club have a reputation of being some of the most accomplished skiers in Northeastern Ontario.

Cross-country skiers can take advantage of several trails in the vacinity of the ski hill starting from the chalet and ending at the chalet. Snowmobilers are also welcome, as the trail system goes to our chalet. A great place to stop and have a coffee.

A badge well worn

This beats going to Flordia
The members of the Larder Ski Club had a special group of people running the hill, they were all volunteers. This badge was very dear to the ones who worked hard and gave up a lot of their time to make the hill that we enjoy today. The chalet was a charming log cabin with a fabulous stone fireplace that always had a roaring fire to warm up the place and the people. Many roamances started while staring at the flames... so I'm told.

Today the chalet is a bit larger and more modern. Hot and cold running water, flush toilet, kitchen facility and a gas fireplace.

The members of the Larder Ski Club taught each other and had a lot of fun doing it.

Today things are not much different. Those that know are passing on the skills. The equipment has changed, but the volunteerism is still alive and well.

Those were the days, if you wanted entertainment you had to build the place first with the material at hand. In the early years of development the larder lake ski club was a beehive of activity, if you wanted to ski , you had to earn the privalege but doing what needed to be done... cutting firewood comes to mind. In 1942 work and fun went hand in hand.
